Thanks to an ambitious and creative self-financing policy, the Teatro Real has been able to successfully overcome the budget cuts of the economic crisis period (2008-2014) and face the coming years with optimism.
2015 ends up with a surplus of 500,000 euros; for 2016 the budget has been increased by a 10%, to a total of 48,161,775 euros.
The contribution of Public Administrations - Education, Culture and Sport Ministry, Madrid´s City Hall, and Madrid´s State Hall- increases by a 3%, to a total amount of 13,611,241 euros, which represents about the 28% of the total budget of the theatre for 2016.
2016 will see an estimate growth of 13.5% in local revenues (ticket sales, space rentals, opera productions sales and rentals, etc.), which translates to a total of 22,714,585 euros.
Contribution in sponsorship will also increase a 13%, to a total of 11,823.950 euros.
The economic success of the Teatro Real, whose self-financing represents around the 72% of the overall budget, is now a model for other European theatres.
Various and very active divisions with different profiles and tasks have been created in recent years to involve the whole of the civil society in supporting, participating and disseminating the Teatro Real´s artistic project.
DOUBLE ANNIVERSARY
Next January will see the beginning of the coming three years of programming and memorials, with which the Teatro Real celebrates a double anniversary: the 200th anniversary of its founding, in 1818 by King Fernando VII; and the 20th anniversary of its reopening, in 1997, after a deep architectural restoration that made possible the return of opera to its natural stage after 72 years of absence.
The climax of the celebrations will take place during the 2017-2018 season, period that hosts both anniversaries.
The program of this double anniversary, declared "event of exceptional public interest", will run from January 1st 2016 to December 31st 2018, and grants the maximum tax benefits to any company that supports it.
Over these three year period a total of 43 operas will be offered to the audience, 28 of which will be staged for the first time at the Teatro Real. There will be 26 new co-productions with major opera houses from Europe and America, and 3 world premieres.
In the context of the anniversary celebrations, various initiatives such as book publishing, CD and DVDs, exhibitions, organization and digitization of the Archives of the Teatro Real, Teatro Real Medal institution, etc. will take place.
A large audiovisual project will bring opera to the streets, squares, auditoriums and theatres in Spain and around the world, with special attention to Latin America, with which the Real is forging important channels of cooperation.
